London’s hip East End Film Festival has been celebrating British and global indie talent for 13 years and counting. As the festival draws to a close, we pick our top 5 stand-out films:
1. A Field in England
Ben Wheatley’s arresting, inventive, downright trippy horror-thriller has been the talk of the town after releasing on multiple platforms on Friday.
2. Lovelace
Amanda Seyfried stars as Linda Lovelace, innocent suburban girl turned infamous porn star. Peter Sarsgaard is chillingly brilliant as her controlling husband. On general release on 23 August .
3. Suspension of Disbelief
Oscar-nominated director Mike Figgis (Leaving Las Vegas) returns with a steamy crime thriller that blurs the boundaries between fiction and reality. Sebastian Koch and Emilia Fox star. On general release Friday 19 July.
4. Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer
This slick documentary follows the media circus around the Pussy Riot protest in Russia, creating a fascinating portrait of the outrageous and outspoken feminist punks.
5. The Outer Edges
Underworld’s Karl Hyde teams up with dynamic Brit filmmaker Kieran Evans for this poetic meditation on the outer edges of London. We’ll be listening to Hyde’s live score at the World Premiere on closing night.
