Sono simpatici ma non ordinari. Cercano un lavoro, ma parlano troppo chiaro per tenerselo. Vogliono aprire una panineria ma non hanno i soldi. Per arrivare all'obiettivo, offrono i loro intimi servizi a donne più grandi di loro.

In Moroccan Gigolos, una commedia di Ismael Saidi, incontriamo Dédé, Nicolas e Samir, tre giovani belgi legati dalla loro nazionalità e dal loro desiderio di sfondare. La Presse ha incontrato il regista e gli artisti di questa produzione Belga e del Quebec.

ISMAËL SAÏDI (sceneggiatore e regista)

Panino preferito: il Kebab

Se c'è una cosa che Ismael ama, è la ricerca di un denominatore comune. E una cosa che egli odia? I lamenti. Questi due ingredienti si fanno sentire nella trama (scritta assieme a François Avard) del film.

"Conoscevo dei tipi che provavano a farcela, ma lo facevano usando macchinazioni folli. Ma almeno, provavano! Non sopporto i piagnoni! Quindi ho scritto questa commedia delineando personaggi che tentano di farcela con i piani più pazzi possibile.", dice.

Il film mette in scena un bianco, un nero e un medio-orientale che hanno in comune di essere belgi. Saidi ne parla con tenerezza: "Sono un belga musulmano in contatto coi valori ebreo-cristiani. E le questioni sociali sono nel mio DNA, dicono. Nel film, mi occupo di questi temi (religione, mancanza di lavoro, multiculturalismo) con una risata."

EDDY KING (Dédé)

Sandwich preferito: il dürüm

Abituato alle panche e ai one man show, l'umorista dei Quebec Eddy King era alla prima esperienza di riprese di un film. "All'inizio, avevo paura a interpretare un testo che non avevo scritto. Ma mi ha fatto piacere dargli colore, dei tic, della mimica, al mio Dédé."

Dei tre, Dédé ha la situazione più precaria, perché è un senza documenti. Ma è anche il più divertente con le sue risposte assassine. "E' il tipo simpatico che si ritrova spesso a mediare tra Samir e Nicolas."

FRANÇOIS ARNAUD (Nicolas)

Sandwich preferito: prosciutto cotto

Secondo Ismael Saidi, il suo personaggio Nicolas è il più cerebrale del trio. Arnaud è molto d'accordo, ma da delle sfumature. "Nicolas molto ingenuo e testone quanto gli altri due amici", dice. "Ma è quello che perde di meno la retta via. Riconduce le cose al primo scopo dell'impresa."

Se i tre attori comici si comprendono a vicenda come sullo schermo, è perché hanno avuto tempo a disposizione fuori dal set, specula Arnaud. "Per giorni di riprese, siamo tutti e tre arrivati a Liège, una città che non conoscevamo, alloggiavamo nello stesso hotel e bevevamo un bicchiere assieme ogni sera. Era un villaggio vacanze."

GUYLAINE TREMBLAY (Catherine)

Sandwich preferiti: pomodori d'estate e tonno d'inverno

Canadese che lavora al quartiere generale dell'OTAN a Bruxelles, Catherine è un'espatriata che si annoia. Quando un'amica del lavoro le fa incontrare Samir, si fa un amico più che un amante passeggero. "Catherine non ha bisogno di sesso, ma di rompere il proprio isolamento", dice l'attrice.

In questa commedia, Guylaine Tremblay interpreta l'unica scena fortemente drammatica, quando si confronta con Cléméntine, la fidanzata di Samir. "Ismael teneva molto a questa scena", dice. "Non voleva andare a finire nel solito fare a capelli e suggeriva piuttosto la rappresentazione di due donne devastate e appassite."

STÉPHANIE VAN VYVE (Clémentine) e REDA CHEBCHOUBI (Samir)

Sorella di Nicolas e fidanzata di Samir, Clémentine cade dalle nuvole il giorno in cui quello che accade sotto il suo naso.

"Non dubita un solo secondo di quello che accade. Quando lo viene a sapere, è una grossa sorpresa", diceva la sua interprete, téphanie Van Vyve incontrata sul set, a Bruxelles, lo scorso febbraio.

Ha adorato il proprio incontro con Guylaine Tremblay, con cui ha girato una scena chiave nel film. "Al solo leggere il copione, Guylaine ha avuto grande forza e ha fatto giustizia al ruolo. Abbiamo ripetuto ed eravamo il lacrime."

Quanto a Reda Chebchoubi, vede molte buone cose in Samir. "E' un ragazzo che ha un rapporto molto fraterno con gli amici. Prova sempre a superarsi e a trovare soluzioni anche quando non ce ne sono."

They are fun but not ordinary. They are looking for a job but they speak out too much to keep it. They wish to open a snack bar but they don't have the money. To reach their goal, they offer their intimate services to older women.

In Moroccan Gigolos, a comedy by Ismael Saidi, we meet Dédé, Nicolas and Samir, three young Belgians bound by their nationality and their will to make it. La Presse met the film-maker and the artists of this Belgian and Quebecer production.

ISMAËL SAÏDI (writer and film-maker)

Favorite sandwich: Kebab

If there is a thing that Ismael loves, that's looking for a common denominator. A thing he hates? Complaints. These two ingredients have a role in the plot (co-written with François Avard) of the movie.

"I knew guys that wanted to go somewhere and they would try through the craziest plans. But at least they tried! I can't stand crybabies! So, I wrote the movie creating characters that try to make it by the most foolish means.", he says.

The movie puts on the scene a white man, a black man and a middle-eastern that share the fact of being Belgian. Saidi speaks about them with tenderness. "I'm a muslim Belgian in touch with hebrews-christian values. And social issues are in my DNA, they say." he says. "In the movie I approach these topics (religion, lack of job, multiculturalism) with a laugh."

EDDY KING (Dédé)

Favorite sandwich: the dürüm

Used to benches and one man shows, the Quebecian humorist Eddy King was at his first experience in shooting a movie. "At the beginning, I was nervous about playing a script I hadn't written. But it was a pleasure to give my Dédé some colors, some tics, some mimics."

Among the three, Dédé is in the most precarious circumstances, being without papers. He's also the most amusing, though, with his killing replies. "He's the fun guy who often finds himself mediating between Samir and Nicolas."

FRANÇOIS ARNAUD (Nicolas)

Favorite sandwich: sweet-ham

According to Saidi, Nicolas' character is the brainiest of the trio. Arnaud very much agrees, though he adds shades: "Nicolas is just as naive and headstrong as his friends. But he's also the one that loses his path the less. He leads the things back to the original goal of the project."

If the three actors gets each-other as they burn the screen, that's because they have had time together off set, muses Arnaud. "For some days of shooting, the three of us went to Liège, a city we did not know, and stayed at the same hotel, had a drink together in the evening. It was like a holiday village."

GUYLAINE TREMBLAY (Catherine)

Favorite sandwiches: tomatoes in the summer, tuna in winter

A Canadian traveling to the OTAN's headquarters in Bruxelles, Catherine is a bored expatriate. When a friend at work introduces her to Samire, she makes a friend rather than a temporary lover. "It's not the sex Catherine needs, but to break her isolation", says the actress.

In this comedy, Guylaine Tremblay plays the one heavy dramatic scene, confronting Clémentine, Samir's girlfriend. "Ismael cared a lot about the scene.", she says. "He didn't want it to turn in the usual catfight and suggested instead a portrait of two desperate and defeated women".

STÉPHANIE VAN VYVE (Clémentine) and REDA CHEBCHOUBI (Samir)

Nicolas' sister and Samir's girlfriend, Clémentine is very surprised the day she learns what happens under her nose.

"She never questions what happens, not for a second. When she learns it, she really surprised" said her portrayer Stéphanie Van Vyve met on set last February.

She love meeting Guylaine Tremblay with whom she plays a key scene in the movie. "Just reading the text, Guylaine was of a great strength and felt right. Rereading, there were tears already."

As for Reda Chebchoubi, he sees a lot of good in his Samir. "He's a guy that has a really close relationship with his friends. He's always trying to surpass himself and finding solutions even when there aren't any."
