Abbiamo incontrato i tre protagonisti del film, Franços Arnaud (il bianco), Reda Chebchoubi (l'orientale) e Eddy King (il nero) e il regista, Ismael Saidi.
Morrocan Gigolos è una commedia belga. Un genere ancora molto raro nel nostro Paese...
Ismaël Saïdi: Quando chiedevo il finanziamento, mi domandavano sempre: qual'è il messaggio di questo film? Dicevo che non ne aveva uno, che c'era una struttura sociale dietro ma che non c'era un messaggio particolare. Mi dicevano che c'era bisogno di un tema profondo. Non capivo perché era tanto un tabou voler fare un film di distrazione. Avevo voglia di far ridere. Ma nel panorama cinematografico belga, non ci sono molte commedie. Anche se ci sono molti comici nel paese. Siamo i re dell'autoironia.
Siamo d'accordo che non ci sia messaggio, dunque? Diventare gigolos non è una soluzione ai problemi economici?
Ismaël Saïdi, facendosi una bella risata: Questo film è una visione di quello che è il mio Belgio. Il leitmotiv di questi tre tipi che vivono a Bruxelles, è la speranza. Vogliono fare qualcosa con la loro vita. È quello che mi piace di loro.
Si prostituiscono, ma è per sfondare. Ma non faccio elogi alla prostituzione. Poco importa la destinazione, conta il viaggio. Conosco tipi di quel genere. Sono di Schaerbeek. Sono cresciuto circondato da tizi che si inventano tutto il tempo escamotages che permettano loro di sfondare.
Com'è stato calarsi nei panni di un gigolo?
François Arnaud: Era molto semplice, perché iniziano questa cosa con molta ingenuità ma quando sentono che si allontanano dal loro obbiettivo, reagiscono. Non si giudicano. Ciascuno trova un modo di banalizzare la cosa nel proprio spirito, per arrivare a vivere con questo idea.
Reda Chebchoub: Quello che è bello è che questo è un film che parla di sesso ma senza sesso. È un film per tutto il pubblico, una commedia che non ha alcuna pretesa diversa dal divertire. Ma quando giro un film, parto dal principio che devo poterlo mostrare a mia madre. Questo è un po' "caldo", ma va bene.
Le madri, è quella la vostra nicchia di mercato in quanto prostituti. Era facile condividere scene di intimità con delle donne ben più grandi di voi?
Reda Chebchoub: Nella vita reale sono una persona timida. Abbiamo girato in piscina, il giorno dell'acquagym. Non ho mai avuto così paura in vita mia. Sono venute a trovarci dicendoci: "Mmm, siete voi i gigolos?" Noi rispondevamo: "No, signore, siamo gli attori." Mi sono anche preso una manata sul sedere.
Eddy King: Una di queste donne mi ha detto: "Sa, per fare una buona zuppa, si mettono carote giovani in vecchie pentole.
I tre gigolos sono un nero, un bianco ed un orientale. Questa mescolanza era voluta dall'inizio?
Ismaël Saïdi: È là che sono cresciuto. Quando ho cominciato a scrivere la storia, non avevo dei produttori. È venuto dalla fonte. Sono cresciuto li. Quello che è affascinante è che mi hanno detto che era politicamente corretta, quel mix. Mi sono detto: se è visto come politicamente corretto, tanto meglio. Abbiamo fatto molta strada. Samir, Nicolas and Dédé are some lovely braggarts. Their dream to open a snack bar is on the line because of their incapability to keep a job. Because to reach their goal, they need money and quickly. The trio's newest idea? Becoming gigolos. And even though they really don't have the looks, their business will be an immediate success.
Here is the plot of Morrocan Gigolos, a Belgian comedy of the same kind of Les Barons. We met the three protagonists of the movie, François Arnaud (the white), Reba Chebchoubi (the middle eastern), Eddy King (the black) and the filmmaker Ismael Saidi.
Morrocan Gigolos is a Belgian comedy. Still a rare genre in our country...
Isamael Saidi: While submitting funds requests, I was often asked: what's the message behind this movie? I said there was non, that there was a social structure behind it but there was no message in particular. They said it needed a deep them. I didn't understand why it was such a taboo wanting to direct a fun movie. I was in the mood of making laugh. But in Belgian the cinematographic system, there aren't many comedies. Even though there are lots of humorists in the country. We are the kings of self-irony.
So, are we on the same page about not being a message in it? Isn't becoming gigolos the answer to all economical troubles?
Ismael Saidi, laughing hard: This movie is a view of what my Belgium is. These three living in Bruxelles' leitmotiv is hope. They want to do something with their lives. That's what I like about them. They prostitute themselves, but to make it. I'm not praising prostitution. It's not about the journey, it's the destination. I know dudes like that. I'm from Schaerbeek. I grew up surrounded by dudes who were up to all kinds of things to make it.
How was it to become a gigolo?
François Arnaud: Pretty easy, because they start thig thing very naively but when they feel they are distancing themself from their goal, they react. They do not judge themselves. Each of them finds it in his heart to make it easy, to live with it.
Reda Chebchoub: What's good about this, it's that's a movie that talks sex without any sex. It's an all audience movie, a comedy that wants nothing more than making you laugh. When I shoot a movie, I start from the premise that I need to be able to show it to my mom. This one is a little hot, but it's good.
Mommies, that's your target as gigolos. Was it difficult to share intimate scenes with women so much older than yourselves?
Reda Chebchoub: In real life, I'm pretty shy. We shot at a pool, on aquagym's day. I've never been more scared in my life. They came to us and said: "Mmh, so are you the gigolos?" We'd say: "Nope, madams, we are the actors." I even had my butt slapped.
Eddy King: One of these women told me: "You know, to make a good soup you put young carrots into an old pot.
The three gigolos are black, white and middle-eastern. Do you want this mix from the start?
Ismael Saidi: That's where I grew up. When I started writing the script, I had no producers. It came from the source. I grew up there. What fascinates me is that they told me it was politically correct, that mix. I said to myself: if they view it as politically correct, all the better. It was a long way. To me, it's like a picture of Schaerbeek just as I first knew it.

Allora vi dico cosa ho carpito dall'ultimo video: oltre il film in questione parlano di 50 shades of grey e penso gli dicano che nonostante tutto ha raggiunto una certa notorietà anche solo essendo comparso tra i candidati. Poi parlano anche di TB ma non ho capito nulla XD . -

Una recensione del film (traduzione a cura dello staff). // Movie review (translation by the staff). CITAZIONEMoroccan Gigolos: un'ora e mezzo di puro piacere
Ho assistito il 19 ottobre scorso all'avant-premier a Parigi di Moroccan Gigolos. Non so se sia per il fatto che questa serata facesse parte di un super week-end con le mie amiche americane o se perché dopo i film e documentari piuttosto sobri proposti ai ventiduesimi Quindici giorni di Cinema Francofonos del Centro Wallonie Bruxelles, ma questa commedia era più che benvenuta. Ve lo dico chiaramente, ho passato un'ora e mezza di puro piacere (che cade piuttosto bene quando una ha appena visto dei gigolos).
Questo film è il primo lungometraggio belga del regista marocchino Ismael Saidi, ma è anche il risultato di una vera sinergia tra il cinema belga e quello del Québec.
La trama è molto semplice. A Bruxelles, tre amici di infanzia, Samir (Reda Chebchoubi), Nicolas (François Arnaud) e Dédé (Eddy King) vivono di lavoretti temporanei quanto poco lucrativi. Sognano di aprire uno snack bar e quando trovano il posto perfetto (di fronte a una scuola), decidono di lanciarsi nell'avventura. Il solo piccolo (grosso) contrattempo? Devono trovare il denaro per pagare l'affitto del locale, e questo in meno di un mese. E trovare molto denaro quando non si ha -o se ne ha poco o nulla- lavoro, è, come qualcuno direbbe, un inferno.
Quando, in seguito ad un incidente d'auto, Samir si vede proporre 200 euro da una donna matura in cambio di qualche istante di piacere, Dédé ha una rivelazione; creeranno un'agenzia di gigolos: i Moroccan Gigolos vengono al mondo (perché nonostante tutto, Moroccan si venderò meglio che i Gigolos Belgi, come rimarca Samir).
Personalmente, ho riso dai primi minuti d'apertura e non ero la sola (mi è già capitato di essere l'unica a ridere in un cinema e in questi momenti oscillo tra il sentimenti di solitudine nel comprendere veramente e quello di non aver capito nulla), cosa che è proprio un buon segno.
Alcune persone potrebbero trovare che, malgrado il titolo intrigante, il film resta molto soft per quanto riguarda le scene scabrose. A costoro, direi che se è quello che volete vedere, aspettate l'uscita di 50 Shades of Grey, anche se, sia detto en passant, la scena di François Arnaud di fronte a una cliente adepta del sadomaso è esilarante!
Moronccan Gigolos è prima di tutto una commedia, quindi ovviamente questo film non ha una profonda riflessione sulla società belga contemporanea, ma si passa un momento piacevole di distensione e questo, per parte mia, è tutto quello che domandavo al film.
E ad essere onesta, Ismael Saidi malgrado tutto si avvicina a delle questioni sulla societa come la crisi, la difficoltà a trovare un lavoro stabile, la volontà di una generazione di uscire dalla propria condizione di mediocrità e dal proprio quartiere. In più, il personaggio interpretato da Guylain Tremblay, tutto eleganza e delicatezza, è particolarmente toccante.
Il regista ha anche riunito un cast che funziona perfettamente. Reda, François e Eddy sembrano veramente conoscersi da sempre e ho avuto l'impressione di aver già ascoltato le loro battute ascoltando gruppi di amici nella metro, segno che i loro dialoghi sono "naturali".
Avevo dimenticato che François Arnaud poteva essere divertente a forza di vederlo con le sue parrucche in The Borgias, ma bisogna dice, oltre ad essere davvero affascinante, che egli è perfetto per questo genere di commedia. Posso ben dirlo a voi, mi è appena dispiaciuto che abbia perso il suo accento del Québec... Nessuno a Parigi mi crede quando dico che l'accento del Québec è sexy... ma in quel caso sfoderare un video di François Arnaud vale tutte le spiegazioni del mondo. Ma ovviamente, capisco che Nicolas si suppone sia belga... per contro, cerco ancora un esempio di accento belga che sia glamour...
Eddy King è senza dubbio il personaggio più comico del film e l'ho trovato assolutamente affascinante, se non mi avessero detto alla presentazione della proiezione, non avrei mai potuto credere che si trattasse del suo primo ruolo al cinema, tanto sembra a proprio agio.
Reda Chebchoubi interpreta un Samir convincente e toccante nella sua relazione con Clémentine (la sua fidanzata) e Catherine (sua cliente regolare). E' il personaggio centrale del film e sento che il regista ha messo un po' del proprio vissuto in Samir.
In breve, se volete passare un buon momento, andate a vedere questo film che uscirà in Québec l'8 novembre.
E ultimo consiglio, se ne avete l'opportunità, acchiappate l'occasione di vedere il film in presenza del cast che è tanto adorabile e simpatica... Esattamente quello che ci si attende dal mix belga e del Québec.CITAZIONEMoroccan Gigolos: one hour and a half of pure pleasure
Back on October 19th, I went to the avant premier of Morrocan Gigolos in Paris. I don't know whether it was was that this night was part of a super weekend with my American friends or if it was because after the rather sober movies and documentaries at the 22° Forthnight of the Francophile Cinema at the Wallonie Bruxelles Centre, but this comedie was more than welcome. I'll honestly tell you I spent one hour and a half of pure pleasure (which is to be expected when you've just watched gigolos).
This movie is the first Belgian feature film by the Moroccan filmmaker Ismael Saidi, but also the result of a real synergy between Belgian and Quebecer cinema.
The plot is pretty simple. In Bruxelles, three childhood friends, Samir (Reba Chebchoubi), Nicolas (François Arnaud) and Dédé (Eddy King) live out of part-time jobs as temporary as they are not that much lucrative. They dream of opening a snack-bar and when they find the perfect place (in front of a school) they decide to go for it. The only tiny (pretty big) problem? They need to find the money to pay the place's rent, and in less than a month. And finding money when you have little to no work is, as they say, hell.
When, after a car accident, Samir finds himself offered 200 euros by a mature woman in exchange for some moments of pleasure, Dédé has an epiphany; they are going to start a gigolos agency: the Moroccan Gigolos are born (because nevertheless, Moroccan will sell better than Belgian Gigolos, as remarks Samir).
Personally, I was laughing from the first few minutes at the opening and I was not alone (it has happened to me to be the only one to laugh in a cinema and in these moment I'm thorn between a feeling of solitude for being the only one to really understand what's happening and the not understanding a thing), which is a really good sign.
Some might find that, hot title notwithstanding, the movie stays "soft" on the spicy scenes. To them, I'd say that if that's what you are after, just wait for 50 Shades of Grey's release, even though, just a thought, the scene with François Arnaud facing a client into BDSM is exhilarating!
Moroccan Gigolos is first of all a comedy, so it's obvious this movie won't feature a deep reflexion on Belgian contemporary society, but you spend a pleasant moment of relaxation and, for my part, it's all I asked of this film.
To be honest, Ismael Saidi does, nevertheless, approach some society matter such as the crisis, the difficulty in finding a permanent job, the will of a generation to come out from its mediocrity condition and from its neighbourhood. In addition to that, the character portrayed by Guylain Tremblay, all elegance and delicacy, is particularly touching.
The film-maker has also reunited a cast that work perfectly together. Reda, François and Eddy seem to really know eachother since forever, and I've had the feeling I already heard their lines listening to groups of friends in the tube, proof that their dialogues were "natural".
I had forgotten that François Arnaud could be fun after watching him in his toupées in The Borgias, but it needs to be said that, in addition to being really stunning, he's perfect for this kind of comedy. I can tell you, I was a little sorry he lost his Quebecer accent... Nobody in Paris believes me when I say that Quebecer accent is sexy... but in this situation, unseathing a video of François Arnaud is worth more than every explaination. Obviously, though, I understand that Nicolas is supposed to be Belgian... on the other hand, I'm still looking for a glamour Belgian accent...
Eddy King is without doubt the most comical character of the movie, and I found him absolutely stunning. If they hadn't told me at the issuing of the projection, I'd never be able to believe it was his first cinematic role, so much he looks at ease.
Reba Chebchoubi pulls off a convincing and touching Samir in his relationship with Clémentine (his fiancee) and Catherine (his regular client). It's the main character of the movie, and I fell the film-maker put some of his own in Samir.
Shortly, if you want to spend a good moment, go watch this movie that will be released in Quebec on November 8th.
Last piece of advice, if you have the chance, take the opportunity to watch the movie with the cast, who is so adorable and fun... Exactly as it's to be expected from a Belgian and Quebecer mix.
