    CITAZIONE
We've seen that Mary takes her responsibility to Scotland seriously. Does this clause make her even more cutthroat than ever?
Absolutely. In the upcoming episodes, she has to make some really hard decisions and really step up to the plate, and being more conniving and more cunning and more cutthroat. In this [week's] episode in particular, she learns about this secret clause that her mother and Queen Catherine orchestrated behind her back that eventually sells out Scotland to the French if she doesn't bear an heir. It's a dual betrayal by Marie de Guise — not only betraying her country, but also Mary. She embarks on this very dangerous plan to have this contract nullified. She gets her hands on some pretty sensitive information, which she uses to sort of blackmail everybody who's involved, which is a very dangerous game to play! Queen Catherine is not someone you bluff!

Mary hasn't always had the easiest of relationships with her mother. Will we see the rift grow even more?
This is the ultimate betrayal. Mary has lived her life solely for her country, and to have her mother underhandedly sell not only Mary out, but the whole country, for something as trivial as personal gain is a terrible blow to Mary. While she is her mother, and she does want her to live, this betrayal wounds Mary very deeply, and makes the decisions she has to make a little bit easier to stomach.

Does this cause problems in Mary and Francis's marriage?
It does and it doesn't. Francis is unaware of this clause. Once Mary gets past the initial, "Oh God, does he know" moment, it makes their bond stronger. They both work to circumvent this clause for the benefit of both nations, which is really awesome. The problem with them, unfortunately, comes a little bit later where she has to choose between protecting her country or protecting France. She has to make a decision about revealing information she has concerning certain parties which could essentially throw France into civil war.

They've already had to deal with so much as a couple. Are we going to see more bumps in their marriage?
There's a large adjustment period for the both of them. Both of them are essentially responsible for two separate, somewhat opposing countries, and they can't act in the best interest of each other. A lot of their marital tension coming up will be politically-based. There's always trouble with these two. As the episodes go on, it's unfortunate that they just can't seem to catch a break!
