Picturesque Films has started production on writer-director Balazs Juszt's debut film, which will shoot in Budapest and Rome.

Thursday, a psychological thriller that will mark the feature directorial debut of Balazs Juszt, has set an international cast led by François Arnaud (The Borgias), Jordi Molla (Riddick), Ana Ularu (Serena) and Mark Ivanir (A Late Quartet), The Hollywood Reporter has learned exclusively.

Picturesque Films has begun production on the film, which follows a modern-day Catholic priest from his small town parish in Massachusetts into the depths of the Roman underworld. Filming will take place in Budapest and Rome.

A UCLA grad, writer-director Juszt has spent his career working on music videos and commercials in Hungary.
Guy Moshe and Matthew G. Zamias are producing via Picturesque Films. Esther Turan, a TV commercial producer, is co-producing. The film is executive produced by Cobera Capital and Moritz, Patrick and Johanna Hamm.

Arnaud played Cesare Borgia in Showtime's The Borgias and starred in I Killed My Mother, which premiered at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival. He's repped by APA and Management 360.

Spanish actor Molla appears as Santana in Vin Diesel starrer Riddick, and his previous film credits include Blow and Knight and Day. He's repped by APA and Katrina Bayonas' Kuranda Management.

Ularu, who also appeared on <i>The Borgias and 2010's Outbound, is repped by Tavistock Wood.

Ivanir is a Russian-born actor who began his career in Israel. He's appeared in Schindler's List, The Good Shepherd and Big Miracle. He's repped by Abrams Artists Agency.

Ma gli attori della serie lavorano sempre fra di loro? XD A coppie? Comunque, già immagino l'ira delle fan, scatenate per la presenza della Ularu - di certo speravano di più in Holliday sullo schermo insieme a ~~Cesare~~ François.

Erano molto carini insieme e su tumblr ho letto qualcosa (forse era proprio lei che parlava) che diceva che fin dai primi giorni di riprese #in TB c'era stato grande feeling

Sì, sta meglio. Più che altro, i capelli corti sono adattissimi per chi ha il viso molto magro o lungo - come Ana, appunto. Poi il caschetto è un taglio molto carino e mi piace la frangia.

A thriller is being made in the ramshackle psychiatric ward

We visited the set of the movie “Thursday” which at the moment is being filmed in Budapest. Partly it is special because the writer/director of the international production is the Hungarian Balázs Juszt, and we had to visit the now abandoned National Psychiatric Ward, since certain parts of the movie take place there. We discovered the deserted corridors as much as we could.
"Thursday” is a supernatural psycho-thriller which tells the story of a priest named Smith who descends into the dark circles of Rome. Of course, the details of the movie are highly confidential so we learned only little bits and pieces. Despite the Hungarian director, who graduated in the US, the movie is fully American and it is financed by American and Austrian investors.
They didn’t reveal any secrets regarding the movie but we were lucky enough to ask one of the actors, Federico Galavis about his experiences in Budapest whose character had just died in an explosion so he wasn’t in a hurry at all. The actor told us that he loves the city and beside the gym he loves to spend his time in the city’s different ruinpubs, and he and the already family-like crew love to dive into the Budapest night life. Naturally one of his big favourites is Szimpla, but he said he would definitely want to visit the Wine Festival.
Regarding the actors the picture is quite versatile: one of the two main characters is Mark Ivanir who was in Schindler’s list, and the other is Francois Arnaud from Montreal. The fairer sex is represented by the beautiful Ana Ularu from Romania. But of course there are Hungarian actors too in the group. For example Ferenc Hujber, who became famous thanks to “Valami Amerika”, represents the dark side in the movie playing a Nazi. The actor said that he didn’t consciously prepare for his role at all, because he thinks it all comes out of nowhere.
By the way the ex-psychiatric ward seems perfect for a production like this. Despite the sunshine it was one of the most horrific places we have ever been. The abandoned corridors, the barred windows and the musty air provided the atmosphere well known from horror movies; and of course the strange feeling that there are little girls with black hair waiting for us in every corner.
To tell the truth there were certain stairs we didn’t dare climb, and we turned back at entrances leading to darker corridors. However the biggest fear is not the ghosts of the patients treated with electrotherapy but the cave-in hazards of the building unused since 31 December 2007. Eszter Turán, the Hungarian co-producer of the movie told us that they restored certain places for the movie, for example the chapel which has painted glasses and a dome and which is by the way also pretty creepy.

Juszt da Balazs non si preoccupa del fattore di eccitazione del suo film. Anche attraverso il protagonista maschile - che ha lavorato ne I Borgia, François Arnaud - approfondisce la malavita romana. Sarà un sacerdote che lavora nei servizi segreti del Vaticano per conto di un amico chiamato Thursday integrato ad un'organizzazione terrorista di genere anarchico, che nel corso del tempo si scopre essere chiamato a capo della gang, reclutato come spia alla fine, legato a Satana.

"Detta così potrebbe suonare come una sorta di Angel Heart (film del 1987)" dice il regista. "Ecco, questo paragone non è troppo distante dalla realtà. Sì, Angel Heart è una via di mezzo fra i vari film a cui mi ispiro e che ho guardato prima di girare, per esempio Fight Club, The Devil's Advocate e The Ninth Gate."

"Siamo interessati a raccontare questa storia, che ha per protagonisti sette individui, ognuno di essi chiamati col nome di un giorno della settimana. C'è anche un romanzo a proposito, ma è naturalmente diverso dal mio film. Lì si parla di un detective di Scotland Yard ed è ambientato nel 1906, a Londra, con nobili, elefanti e palloni aerostatici. Bizarro ed assurdo, ma volevo raccontare la storia in maniera diversa" dice Balazs Juszt, che ha lavorato alla sceneggiatura per tre anni, scrivendone ben venti versioni diverse."

"All'inizio volevamo girare in Romania, ma non c'è un'industria cinematografica abbastanza importante, come invece è qui, avremmo dovuto provvedere al trasferimento di molti artisti ungari, e sarebbe costato molto. Filmando in Ungheria, con un supporto locale, ci ha permesso di rientrare nel budget di due milioni di dollari, e di poter approdare pure a Roma. E naturalmente non ho chiesto mica un favore agli amici, tutti quelli che hanno lavorato sul set sono stati ben pagati".

La crew comprende numerosi nomi illustri che hanno lavorato pure a Hollywood. Per esempio Iván Pohárnok che ha dato il proprio contribuito, quanto a trucco ed effetti speciali, ne Il rito, I pilastri della Terra, Cloud Atlas, Mondo senza fine ed in molti altri film e serie di successo. O Judit Varga, che ha curato le decorazioni del set de I Borgia in ben tre puntate e qui ha scovato sale rivestite in legno e con camino. Un ex manicomio che rende eccellente un tempo congelato: nei suoi cortili e nelle cantine non è successo nulla dopo la chiusura, nel 2007 , tranquillamente fatiscenti.

"Mi dispiace che l'edificio sia così marcio, ma allo stesso tempo l'adoro. Beh, può essere trasformato in qualunque location. Quanto alla chiesa, invece, la posizione è ottima, ideale per le scene all'esterno. È stato sufficiente far saltare fuori alcuni graffiti, atterrare i pochi cartelli stradali in lingua inglese..."
